Now that is out of the way, let's jump into what can seem like the overwhelming world of essential oils. I like to think of them as part of nature's chemistry set, and remember - you don't need to have an advanced science degree to build a "volcano". Just a little vinegar and baking soda (which also makes a great drain cleaner).
So what exactly are essential oils?
They are the extremely concentrated liquid constituents of aromatic plants, trees, flowers, and seeds. All those properties that a plant has to take care of itself?
Yeah, it's all those chemical compounds. Many of the medications we use and trust today are based off or are actual synthetically made versions of molecular compounds found in plants.
Essential oils have been used by humans for thousands of years and just like anything their usage and distillation methods have evolved over time.

BASIC TIPS
When selecting oils, just like leggings, not all oils are created equally. Make sure you do a little research about where the product came from and that the company actually producing the oil is reputable. If it seems too cheap there is probably a reason.
If the label cautions that it is flammable or should not be ingested, just put it back on the shelf. It probably means it was cut with or distilled with chemicals and there are more than just essential oils in the bottle.
High quality products will include appropriate usage instructions and dilution ratios for topical applications. Please use some caution when using essential oils, understanding that they are chemicals.
Google and Pinterest are great resources – but as with everything, use common sense when researching. There is a lot of incomplete information found in dialog about essential oils.
